Your examples about the use of all the senses to movtivate students reminds me
of something which happened when I was teaching with Ken Gogel at the
University of Northern Iowa. As a student of Viktor Lowenfeld, he strongly
believed in encouraging students to become more aware of the world and to take
it in with all the senses. He told me about what he had done one day with his
pre-service elementary classroom teachers. He had found a fresh "road-kill" of
a racoon and brought the body to his pre-service elementary class for students
to look at. He wanted them to see the natural beauty of this wild animal and
experience the life/death of this animal. The students freaked out and
complained to the Dean. Ken Gogel was a wonderful teacher and human being.
When I first came to the University of Northern Iowa back in 1985 (I teach
somewhere else now) he took me on a walking trip of campus. He introduced me
to all his "friends" such as the small pine tree, his favorite bush, his
favorite hill, his favorite dumpster. I never met someone so truly alive and
so in tune with all his senses. I suspect he was never alone and he enjoyed a
very rich inner life. Thanks Marvin for reminding me about the importance of
the senses. Ken Gogel passed away in 1991 and he lives on in my heart. No
doubt his elementary classroom teachers will never forget him. Perhaps his
lesson on the racoon was lost to those students, but it wasn't lost on me and
others who truly know how to take life in to the fullest. (Carpe Diem)
