sketchbooks for elementary

Date: Tue Jul 27 2004 - 14:49:31 PDT

I use sketchbooks with 3rd-5th grade. Our state gives every teacher
$200.00 and our PTO gives us $50.00 every year to use on whatever we need
for our classroom. I use part of this money to purchase the really cheap
paper folder with pockets and 3 brads. I buy different colors so all of a
class can be the same color (ex. all C-3 are orange, all S-3 blue. I have
a parent volunteer 3 hole punch paper ahead of time. On one of the first
days of school they make their sketchbook by counting out 25 sheets of
paper, putting it in the book and decorating the cover with markers (must
include first and last name and class code) I store all the sketchbooks
from each class in the lid of a copy paper box and it goes on their
classes work shelf. We use the sketchbook for taking notes, preplanning
art projects , writing about their work, use the pockets for keeping
handouts or small parts to collages, etc.. and for sketching. My kids sit
in 4 table groups so when we are finished working with the sketchbooks I
have them stack them all up in the center of the table. When the are
collected by table groups its really easy to pass them out again by just
setting a stack on each table group and then that group of 5-6 can get
theirs quickly. We don't use them every week but have found the idea very
effective. I let them take them home at the end of the year. If we run out
of paper its easy to add more. Also I only let them use pencil in the
actual sketchbook (markers only on cover)
