Linda, Julie and all,

Probably the best way to duplicate the effect would be
using an air brush (with watered down acrylics). It
would be hard to get a lot of kids in one class
period, though. Spray bottles and/or spatter screens
with tooth brushes wouldn't give that fine mist and
soft layering that you can get with spray paints and
air brush.
