There is a good chance that the child was not being disrespectful. A lot of
the middle school students perceive only those who teach the academic subjects
as "real" teachers. On occasions when I help students with their language
arts work (maybe proofreading a paper), they often ask why I am not a "real"
teacher instead of an art teacher. I think they just mean "academic subject"
teacher.

So many students are surprised to learn that health, music, art, home ec, and
gym teachers have to go to college!
