participation grades????

During those times (before holidays, end of the school year) when student
attention to work falters, I use on-task points. I have the class list on
an overhead transparency. I announce that three times during the period, I
will look around and see who is working. Each time I look I will assign the
students either 5 points or zero points. I then put the chart back on the
overhead for everyone to see. This gives the non-workers a chance to change
their behavior and be on task for the next round of points.

I also use a computer grade program and the on-task points for that day or
week are listed. I have never had a parent complain or comment on a poor
grade for on-task points. The title of the category tells the whole story!

Deb, I am glad you shared about the weekly participation grades? I am
starting my 5th year of teaching art and I have toyed with the idea of using
weekly participation grades before and now you have given me the idea to not
use them. I have always thought it might help with discipline, and if you
are not sure it did, that's enough for me! If it would be
able to say so. I won't go through the trouble of doing it then.

  Thanks so much,

I need suggestions for first week activities, proceedures, projects.
etc. for middle school (6-8th) am going into my second year, didn't really
like what I did last
year for first week, then after that they will be working on making
their own portfolios related to the element- line, and aboriginal art for
the 8th grade. school starts in about 2 weeks, yikes!!
Was also wondering if you like weekly participation grades? Not sure if
I will do again this year, I mainly hoped it would help with discipline, not
sure it did and
    makes more work for me.
I'm new to this site, have enjoyed reading new and
    archived posts, thanks! Deb ---
