This drove me nuts too....4th and 5th graders walzting in disrupting the
class. Using music lessons as an excuse to NEVER get anything done. Well I put a
stop to that!!! I told them they are completely responsible for making up
their work. If they come in and behave in a distruptive manner I send them
back to their music teacher to tell him what they have done. And, if I get lots
of excuses and no work....I make it official on the report card. I never
sight music lessons as the reason, (am completely supportive of instrumental
music program!) but site the behavior and not being accountable for work in class.
 After I got tough....situation go much better!

I tell the kids I completely support instrumental music and think it is great
they have the opportunity, but they have to get their art lessons done as
well.
