I don't know the technicalities of this (such as long-term drying) but I know it would often take a couple of weeks for the surface of a painting to be dry to the touch.
I haven't worked in oils for nearly 10 years, and while I used to be relatively "good" at it, it was just such a slow process that I mainly use acrylic paint now.
