my teaching experiences at the elementary level K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 throughout
my career and I feel a "room" is important. There will always be colleagues
that appreciate what you do and at the elementary, there will ALWAYS be those
teachers that love to complain about everything. They even complained that
they had to wash kids hands after leaving my 40 minute art class when I tried
to condense hand built pottery into a 40 minute segment of time with prep
time to prepare the clay piece for working on it again in 7 days!!!!! (damp
paper towel, poly bag, clothes pin, name on bag and the right spot to store
it for that particular class)
Whatever job you take.....do yourself a HUGE favor and send a memo out to all
teachers during preplanning, introduce yourself at the first faculty meeting
and also stand up and discuss your policies.
TO MAXIMIZE valuable time for children in art....this is sorta what I
I'm excited about another year with your students. In order for everyone to
"be on the same page," it is necessary to outline my policies which I've
created in order to maximize the most time possible for my teaching of each
art class. I have each class once every 7 DAYS. I see 8 different classes
per day....except for 2 planning periods per 7 days which totals 54 classes
per week. This also includes the mainstreamed children.
1. Consumable supplies such as paint, construction paper, ink, markers,
etc.) are requisitioned based on my numbers that I will be teaching for the
year. Therefore, I am not able to share my consumable supplies with staff.
Non-consumable supplies such as brayers, brushes, clay tools, etc. can be
borrowed from me as long as my class times are not interrupted. My
suggestion is to place a note or e-mail me as to what non-consumable supplies
you would like to borrow and I will get back to you with whether it's
2. I'm a "nice" person and saying "NO" is difficult. Please don't ask me to
draw and paint particular things for your room or curriculum studies. Our
art curriculum is designated and I have to use my time wisely. Planning for
art is at a premium and I must use it to my advantage for the sake of the
students. I do, however, freelance work on weekends and my fee for this is
$20 per hour if you need something extra special and can't live without it.
3. Your students should prepare for art in YOUR classroom. Some parents
forget art day and send students to me, "dressed to the nines," Smocks
should be worn TO the art room so it does not cut into learning time.
4. Your students will NOT wash hands in art before leaving, so please plan
on stopping by the rest rooms on your return trip from art. There will be
only a few instances when hands are absolutely unbearable.
5. If your students leave art and go to the lunchroom. Please have your
students place their lunchbags/boxes outside the artroom door against the

will be stored until the artshow in March. Parents will be notified about
this so they understand that the annual artshow is IMPORTANT to their

8. Students are welcome to bring an art supply box of their own to art, if
they desire. Their box will not be shared with others.
9. My 3rd grade weaving unit will require teacher reminders before your
students come to art so that they have their "take home to work" project the
day they meet for art.
If you are willing to understand that these "tried and true" requests have
worked then your students will enjoy and learn valuable information about our
world, cultures, and artifacts from K through 5. Their finished products
will be examples of this valuable learning and we will all benefit.
