I find it difficult to restrict my high school students from talking.
However, I have explained to them that they are only allowed to do "art
talking." What is art talking? It is talking where you are not looking at
anyone while you continue to work. If I see students looking at each other
or even one person looking and not working, I'll say...."If you can't talk in
'art talk', then don't talk." The kids usually laugh, say they're sorry, and
get back to work. It's funny how all of a sudden I'll remember something
that I do that seems to work. It's a good feeling. EAC
