I was under the impression that we couldn't make the students recite the Pledge of Allegiance that if they choice not to recite then they had to just stand there and be respectful of other who wanted to recite it.
As far as "school appropriate" issues I place restrictions on my students in accordance with school policy. I tell them that if they feel the need to create something that I can't allow in the classroom that they can do it in the privacy of their own home. The old adage "the is a time and place for everything" holds true for this issue. School is not a place that for art work that promotes drugs, violence to the school or a person, sexual conduct, gangs, etc. I do believe that art can be a way to educate the students of the negative consequence of these issues and help the students deal with them in a protected environment.
My first year of teaching I had a student that made a knife form clay. This student was a wonderful student who was in JROTC, great grades and never gave me any kind of discipline problem. I told the student that if he wanted to keep the knife that I would have to turn it in to the principle and he would have to take whatever consequence the principle deem appropriate, or we could just put the knife in the recycle bin and go on with class. The student choice to recycle the clay.
Another thing I have found out that if a students makes a bong, pipe, even and ashtray it inevitably gets dropped on the floor just before loading it in the kiln. I believe that there is a heavier gravitational pull on items that are drug related.
Well, these are my thoughts on the issue.

This is an interesting thread . . . I allow some things in my art room that
are not allowed in the larger school community just so personal expression
doesn't seem entirely squelched -- like hats, for instance. I also don't
make the students recite the Pledge of Allegiance -- is this bad? They are
high school students and it seems like an empty ritual to me, so I feel phony
making them recite it. What do you think?
