Re: "keeping entertained"-year round

Jayna and others,
I think what we see here is the fact that teaching art is sooooo different
depending on whether it is Elementary, Middle, or High school. Attention
spans for the students are so different from the little ones to the bigger
ones. Also, classes have different feels depending on their length of time,
and sometimes depending on the socioeconomic group. Some are geared toward
college....some are getting by. I taught middle school for 2 years and I did
not have a minute to sit down. It was in a school near the border with large
classes and many students who did not speak English. Therefore, I chose to go
back to high school It was the difference between day and night for me. I
admire Elementary and Middle School teachers!!!! And any of you who have any
time are WONDERFUL managers and teachers. I know that for sure. I have found
that at the high school level, the students enjoy feeling a sense of freedom
of choice and like to work on their own. The fact that a high school teacher
can work on their own work, in my opinion, says that they have provided a
nurturing environment where the students know that they are in there to work.
Everything must be organized and the lessons must be challenging as Jayna has
said her room is. Jayna, I think being able to do your own work says that you
are a good teacher. A teacher is definitely not doing their own work if the
students are not on task and well behaved. But no matter how good the
teacher, each class is different also. So, some of us can entertain
ourselves, others cannot. Neither says that the teacher is not doing their
jobs. Our jobs are sooooo different.
I am hoping to do some of my own work this year as I go into a high school
situation at a different school which has block scheduling. I have always
felt that it is good for the students to watch us work so they can see the
process involved. I purchased the book, Mandalas and am dying to start making
some of my own. Wish me luck!!
