When you said something about starting a group for pond fanatics, I checked at http://groups.yahoo.com and found that there are several email lists (like our alt. "Getty" list) for those interested in ponds. Like the ArtsEducators list, people can share files and more.
I also checked out yahoo's webrings and there are several backyard pond webrings where people share info, tips and pictures.
Getting more and more interested in this (though I still think it'll have to wait until next year....)
