Each of my tables has a captain. that person is responsible for making sure
the table is cleaned up. I give them a 10 minute warning and we clean up at
5 till unless really dirty. I try to get them to put stuff away while they
are working so clean-up goes faster. I remind them that having a longer
clean-up time takes away from working time. I make it a competition in which
the the first table cleaned up gets to leave first. My first graders, if
they get cleaned up with time to spare, I allowed them to dance. I know that
won 't work for middle schoolers or high school, but perhaps they would
appreciate some breathing time before the bell rings and they have to rush to
the next class. Some time to socialize or "chill" before going to the next
class. JH
