New kid on the block

Date: Thu Jul 05 2001 - 08:58:38 PDT

Hi -
I'm very new- to the list, to teaching, etc. I was introduced to this space
by a lovely person, Bunki Kramer. She thought I might get some help here.
HELP! I will teach art at an alternative school for pregnant and newly
delivered teens (grades 6/7 through 12) in Orlando, Fl. I co-taught the class
from January to May of 2001. The classes will be mine alone this semester. We
taught only art last year, but have broken the classes up this year. There
will be two periods from 11:00 to 1:30. We split 90 girls (or so) between 4
divisions - Art, Photography, Drama & Dance, and an Asset Notebook
(journaling). I will have the art component.

To come to our agency, BETA Center, the children must continue school,
either through the Orange County School district on site, or the GED program
on site. The population is multi-cultural and diverse. We did a lot of arts
and crafts last year, and I really want to start teaching art and art
history, geared to their level. I have many ideas of my own, and received
some wonderful input from others so far. I do not at this time have access to
the rest of Orange County art teachers, as I am actually an employee of the
agency. I graduated last December, so I am really a rookie, and am a 56 year
old grandmother who is open to any and all suggestions and input from those
who have gone before me. I am excited and scared. I do not wish to harm or
impare these girls. They carry enough baggage now. Thank you for your support.
