In CT we have to take the Praxis I (which is a basic skills test) you used to
be able to skip this step if you scored high enough on the SAT or ACT, but
now you have to take it no matter what. Then you have to take the Praxis II
which is a series of subject matter tests. There are 4 Praxis tests for art,
in CT we have to take 3 of them. For instance in MO they only have to take
one (at least last time I checked). The tests are somewhat difficult they
cover, methods, contents, safety procedures, art history, aesthetics,
criticism, etc. I did study for them and I did pass, but I do now of
experienced art educators who go in unprepared and do not pass. They study
and then go back to take the test and pass.
Also in CT we have to complet the BEST program at the end of our second year.
This is a submission of a teaching portfolio, unit of 4-6 lessons,
assessments, reflections and a video tape of a group discussion,
demonstration, and one-on-one assessment.
Hope this helps. I can't imagine the wasted time and expense if we all have
to be tested every 2 years.....good grief!
