    i read somewhere that the raining cats and dogs thing came from the fact
    that everything (including dead cats and dogs were tossed in the sewers
    under the streets. so when there was fierce period of rain... the sewers
    backed up and dead cats and dogs were floating along the streets.

    gross thought i know... i think i came across that in a book about the
    black plague in italy (research on how it affected art during the time and
    in the future).
