I have been teaching at the High School level for a number of years and
find that the beginning of a new term is always the most difficult. I
will be starting a new semester next week and would like to start off
my classes with something different that would be both interesting and
motivating to my students. I am saying this because I feel that after
teaching in the same subject area and grade levels you tend to get into
a "comfort zone" where your lessons become stale. So I am looking for
something different to start the new semester. Here is what I usually
start off with my grade nine classes - After introducing the Elements
of Design we design a folder to keep terms assignments in. The folder
is divided into sections, within each section they are to utilize one of
the elements of design i.e. a section filled with a variety of lines, or
textures, or values etc.
Another variation that I have tried is starting off with line only, and
have them use a variety of line design variations and patterns in black
and white to complete the folders.
This assignments usually takes about 8-10 classes to complete. I
introduce other work, art history and drawing activities as well while
work progresses on their folders.
If anyone has any other starting assignments, for other grade levels,
that have been used with some success please let me know.
