A colleague of mine did a totem pole out of ceramics. They used PVC pipe, wrapped in
slab clay. The students built up different animals that would be found in the area
(frogs, lady bugs, plants, etc) out of clay and attached them. Each student had a
section about 4" high. They had to coordinate how each piece would fit together, even
had a vine that wrapped all the way up, spiral-style. It was really neat. They put it
in their school's garden. Actually, I think they did three of them, each 5th grade class
or something. I'll try to find the plans, he held a workshop on it, I think.
