Would anyone care to comment on:

Why you feel art history is a vital part of art education?

I am trying to work through this idea myself, and would like to hear your
opinion on the matter. Is it really neccessary to include instruction on
art history? Are students influenced by the works that you show for a
particular lesson? Should students be shown "masterpieces", or does that
make them feel inadiquate with their own art? Should we include art
history at the bachelor's and master's degree level of training for studio
artists? Let me know what you think.
