Marcia,
Art is a REQUIRED subject K-8 according to the Arizona State
Department, just like math, reading, etc. We have state and national
standards to meet. My school administrator (grades 3-5) recognizes the
importance of it, and teachers are not allowed to keep their kids out
for any reason related to making up work from other subject areas.
Occasionally it happens, and all I need to do is ask her to remind
teachers in the daily bulletin that it is not ok to pull out students
from special classes.
It is recognized that students are applying many skills from other
subject areas in art class, and application is considered higher level
learning. Also in the case of some students, especially those with
learning disabilities, art class is one area where they enjoy success
more often than in some other "academic" areas.
Good luck in your meeting with the counselors at your school.
