Re: Working with K-1

I teach K-5. I am lucky in that I have 55 minute classes, 6
classes per day. I very much enjoy the "older" students, grades
2-5, but the very youngest children I find try my patience.
The 55 minute block is almost too long for them, and they come
the last two classes of the day when I am tired (my planning
period is first thing, followed by the six classes). I feel
that I should re-structure the class from the lecture/demo/production/
discussion model I use with other students. I do storytelling
with them which seems to be effective, but I feel that discipline
issues often overide learning with the more immature classes
within this age groups.
Any ideas anyone can share with me for dealing with this age
group would be most appreciated.
