I purchase the Crayola Model Magic each year to use with my students. Yes, it
can be pricey, but I buy it by the tub at a price of around $12 to $13 each.
We used to paint this with acrylic paints, but we've had odd results the past
couple of years with both tempera and acrylic on Model Magic. The paint would
dry initially, and then it would get very tacky in just a few days. It was so
odd! It was almost as if they had changed the recipe somehow. Anyhow, I
usually have the kids decorate the clay with water-based markers. They can
color the finished piece, or better yet, knead the color through the dough to
mix and customize their colors, producing spectacular pastel effects.
