There is a great brand-new book out titled "Observation Drawing with
Children" (Nancy Smith and the Drawing Study Group, published by Teachers
College Press, 1998). It offers developmental frameworks for grades K-6,
along with specific lesson plans, motivational dialogues, visualizations and
reflections. I don't know if Howard Gardner has entered the world of
observational drawing, but meanwhile, this book offers you strong rationale
for encouraging observational drawing among all learners and best of all,
it's written by REAL art teachers! We are just completing a school-wide unit
on observational drawing, and it has been fabulous! A nice way to start the
new year.
