I got this idea from the Bay Area math Project. Make a sq. on a paper. I made mine 19cm.
Then you choose 2 numbers that add up to 19: 12 + 7
Break these numbers down again: 3 + 9 + 4 + 3
Again: 1 + 2 + 3 + 6 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 (should equal 19)
Have the students measure these numbers around each side of the sq.
Connect any one point to another on any other side. Each point should only have one line.
Now start in the center and color one polygon. Go around and color polygons that do not share sides with a colored polygon.
This sounds harder than it really is. If you'd like to have a copy of what it should look like, send me a note.
