Cathy Jo,
Here is an idea that I already used with First Grades on shapes-
It is a circle mobile, where the children use a variety of geometric
shapes on a circular form. Have the children watch as you cut out a
large circle from construction paper and identify the shape. Talk about
things that are circular. Have the children cut a large freehand circle
from paper( doesn't have to be perfect) Have them print their first name
with crayon on one side. Have the children select three or four colors
of construction paper from the scrap box NOT the same color as their
circle.
On the board draw a square and triangle. Identify each shape. Have the
children cut small circles, squares, and triangles from their scraps and
glue to the other side of their paper circle( can overlap) Using crayon,
they can also draw circles, squares, and triangles in the spaces left.
Punch a hole at the top and bottom of their circles and string five to
seven circles with yarn. Attach mobiles overhead. A yarn tassel at the
bottom of each mobile looks great. If you have 30 kids you will have
about 6 mobiles hanging up. Great for an intro. into mobiles too
Have fun with First Grade
