I agree with you. Children enjoy drawing but need short-lived drawing
projects. After about two weeks, they are ready for something new.
What I like to do is a multi-media project which involves more than
drawing or involves using a variety of drawing medias. Currently I am
working on a portraiture unit with second grade to create Native
American portraits to tie into our theme of the Southwest. We spent two
art periods drawing the faces step by step. We mixed our own fleshtones
to paint the face. They will add yarn atop the painting for hair, many
will braid, felt with fringe around the neck to which beads will be
added for clothing. A headdress will be added in relief, feathers,
etc. Finally the portrait is placed atop a chalk pastel southwest
landscape. It sounds like a long project, but the kids love it and
every time they come to art they get to work with a different medium.
Plus, they love the end product.
