At every level there are always those students who finish early for whatever
reason. I have a related assignment for "if you finish early". I usually have
a table with art puzzles, problem solving activities, etc., that they can go
to. Most of the time my assignments have many parts and students are working
at their own pace. Sometimes I set up assignments so that they can do three of
the parts or they can do four without penalty. I often have more than one
thing going on at the time and I do demos or refresher instructions for the
necessary skills frequently and the rest of the assignments are written. But
there is always going to be someone who has finished all that they can do for
that day and needs to have their time structured. I guess the bottom line is
plan that time for them. Give them something to do. And doing nothing is not a
choice. 'Cause we know what that means! :-)
