I agree about controlling the music, at least in the elementary grades. I
think that part of my role as "art(s) specialist" is to expose children to
many types of music as well as art. Sometimes I pick music to go with the
artist or lesson ("Virgil Thompson was friends with Alexander Calder!
Let's listen to the music that was happening when Calder was in Paris...").
But we've heard Chinese, Balinese, Andean, Sun Ra! Surf guitars! Whales!
You name it, we've heard it. I do agree about non-vocal music, although I
have a fondness for opera and (western and Chinese). Fortunately, our
public library is a great source of CD's.
