As Chair of our local school board, I have discussed with the Director of
Schools the concept of lengthening the school day. It is true (as has
been shown by the many families which place children in our ESP or I-Optt
afterschool programs) that a longer school day is not a problem. If we
do lengthen the school day, it will not be the arts educators, alone, who
will experience a change in their school day......classroom teachers,
too, will find that from time-to-time they will be able to start later in
the morning and stay over in the afternoon. I said last night at a board
meeting that too much of what is done in education happens because of
tradition (the school day and school year as applied throughout the
country are prime examples) and that it is time to make necessary changes
which reflect the nature of 21st century society.
