Spread the wealth around! Particularly, in the self-contained classroom,
the teach has the option of taking children on field trips; in Social
Studies, the focus can be at times on artists in the marketplace, and
when studying geography, the focus can be on say, how the arts of the
African continent contribute to it's economy, and when it comes time for
art, this is the time to emphasize skill training. As an art
specialist, as you most likely are, you could prepare guide lines and
resources for the classroom teacher to follow in the interim between
your demonstrations. This follow-up and follow-through must be fully
supported by administrative mandate as is currently "computer literacy"
for teachers. Without this support, very little follow-through can be
accomplished in the self-contained classroom because all teachers do not
have the same appreciation for the arts as you do.

There is a difference between "appreciate" and "enjoy"! We can enjoy a
good book, meal, movie, or tv show, but that does not necessarily mean
that we appreciate these productions. For instance, let us say that we
have an option of showing a kindergarten class a short video on the
artist Paul Klee (which most small children can enjoy) or introducing
them to drawing "circles, squares, and triangles" before showing the
clip. Incidentally, you may want to try this out with your classes!
After kindergartners have been introduced to the geometry of circles,
squares, and triangles, when asked, they immediately identify and
associate these shapes with the works of Klee when they see the video,
and tend to appreciate this experience of association with the arts,
than when seeing the clip - cold
