Since people are recommending that professors and administrators spend
time in the classroom (which I concur with), I might as well throw in
my two cents.

There was no opening for an art teacher when I first moved to my
community, and I was put in a first grade classroom, where I taught
for 5 years 'till I finally got a position as an art educator. In
hindsight, the time in the regular classroom was invaluable. If I were
in charge of the universe, I would require all specialists spend a
year teaching in an elementary classroom.
