Bunki,

An add-on about all that's required to get a credential in California...the
bottom line is that starting salaries are in the low $20,000 range! Imagine
coming out of college with close to 7 years of education, and, if you were
in private school, college loans the size of most mortgages. DUH! They
wonder why they don't get more minority teachers...when administrative
assistants and middle managers with little or no college can make over
sixty grand per year! For the time I spent in college, I could have been a
doctor...

With all the new teachers coming in, though, I am more surprised at how
little college graduates know about culture. Art, music (other than pop),
theater, literature, all seem unknown to many twenty-something teachers.
This would not be the case with European college grads, whose pre-college
education would have exposed them to at least great works of DWM. I really
appreciate those older teachers who go to the opera or museums, and bring
it back to the kids. My concern is that our own poorly educated youth are
educating the next generation.
