San D-
Bravo -- well stated! The importance of being an advocate for the arts through
the existing educational system is something that is not mentioned in any
teacher preparation program I've ever heard of, yet it has consumed much of my
time and energy during my career.
In response to Bunki's comments, I must say that I agree in part, but I also
feel that the recent student teachers I have had have been remarkably well
prepared in terms of both the form and content of teaching. Nothing, after all
can really prepare anyone for facing that first class, but I do find that the
colleges seem to be doing better and better at helping students understand
what it is they are really teaching or have the potential to teach. I am
frustrated as a middle school teacher by the fact that methods classes still
seem to only consider elementary and secondary, virtualy ignoring the unique
needs of middlers.
I am looking forward to reading further takes on this topic!
