I will use a child's artwork in the overall picture of development
assessment if it indicates a serious lack of fine motor skills but even
then it is only one of many indicators and never a primary one.
I had a "gifted" girl who would not draw, paint or use any medium except
crayons (for pre-drawn items) and clay. I also had a boy who could not seem
to learn to write his name, remember letters, count etc. The boy painted
like Van Gogh, heavy paint strokes, unique interpretations. He had an "eye"
and the willingness to experiment!
