High School Counselors

I this really not directly an art education question, but then again it is.
I'm wondering if High School Counselors help or hinder high school
students? Without venting my frustration in dealing with HS Counselors, I
found the person I had to deal with very unaware of the path that Fine Art
students choose to pursue.
What trainning (if any) do these people have or need to deal with our
(Visual Art) students? Should students look only to their art teacher for
suggestions and is this an area (career counseling) that high school art
teacher are expected to do or do because they are motivated to counsel
because the Counselors can't.
Just wondering what the secondary people (or anyone else for that matter) think.
