Ben, I work one morning a week in a local Hospital as a Play
Specialist in their paediatric unit and use drawing as a device to
distract the child from his/her surroundings. A couple of weeks ago
I had a child of 7/8 who was drawing images similar to those of a 6
year old. very controlled and deliberate, but his own images.
There was another child of the same age in the room who dashed off
very set adult influenced images but consistant with his school level.
The first boy had repeated grade 1 and therefore was behind his peer
group and older than his classmates. His drawings showed a
concentration on the task in hand where as the other child showed a
quick visual image indicating his knowledge. I suspect that the child
who had repeated a class had environmental learning problems, lack
of opportunity to learn where as the other child(who's parent was
present) was probably living in a houshold where learning was prized.
I can't see that the first child's drawing would be a predictor of later learning
difficulties but rather as an indicator that this child would benefit
from a more intense one to one teaching situation.
