Oh wow! Lou broke my block! "Try paper airplanes, or hot air balloons."
Then I remembered a project I did last year with Oriental art and perspective.
Using Shosun's "White Birds in Snow" and "Ming Lo Moves the Mountain"
(Author ?) 3rd graders discussed space/depth/perspective. Another aspect of
Asian art is that realism is considered to have to do with movement. (Does
subject look like it could move right off the work?) The birds here have
Then we watercolored a sunset sky and put a tear-paper branch or small roof
on for perspective base-line. As that dried the kids cut 3 shapes
(identical except for size), black paper flying objects. These were glued
into place per size/distance. (Objective/evaluation is demonstrating
understanding that as objects are further away they get smaller and are
placed further up the page. Also the colors turn duller and
pink/violet/purplish but I didn't add this for 3rd graders.)
Objects that kids chose were kites, hot-air balloons, rockets, helicopters,
birds. I think people flying off would be cool! The kids had a great time,
I really think that they learned something and the only problem was doing
the sky background. They did not as yet have the skill to produce a
non-muddy sunset. This might need a practice or 2.
