question about art education classes

Hi, list members...
I've been reading the generalist/specialist comments with much
interest. I'm curious about the number of art education classes required
of those of you who are generalists and if these (or this) class were
taught by art education faculty, by education faculty, or other, and in
what department or school were they (it) taught? Also, to the
specialists--were general education majors in the same art education
class(s) you took?
I have a very specific reason for asking. At our small
college/university the art education class for elementary grades (called
Creative Art: The Young Child) is taught in the fine arts department and
has been, over the past two decades, *required* for both art ed. and early
childhood education majors. I have taught this course three quarter yearly
since 1972. I have found that the mixture, at our school, of art ed. and
early childhood ed. majors is quite interesting and a valuable experience
for students from both majors. The number of art education majors is small
thus making necessary the "blended" major course. I've found that each
learn from the other: art education majors hear about other course work
the ed. majors take. They learn about expectations of the generalist in a
classroom setting. Also, the education majors hear of the challenges of
being an art specialist who will be required to teach 500-750 students
weekly, maybe in a room, maybe on a cart, maybe traveling from school to
Our college/university is now in the process of conversion from
quarter to semester by 1998. In the planning process discussion is
underway in the school of education to "collapse" the art education and
music education classes required of the early childhood education major
into an "integrated arts" course to combine art, music, movement,
storytelling. The proposed course would be taught in the school of
education, not in the art or music areas of fine arts. Our art ed. and
music ed. faculty strongly feel that this should not happen but may be
powerless to prevent the change. So, I wondered if anyone on this list
would care to respond and give some perspective based on personal
experience to this issue? I really appreciate you help.
