Sometimes the far more interesting question is how art work can save us
from mislabeling a child. A number of years ago, I was informed that a
particular first grader was mentally retarded. I pointed out that his
drawings of plants, in particular, were extremely accurate anatomically,
far beyond what would be expected for his age. He accurately represented
opposite and alternate leaf and bud growth in different species, for
example, and drew trees three dimensionally. As a result, more specific
testing was done with the child, and his extreme shyness was addressed with
special attention.
