To Sears, Ellen-
When I taught my 9th graders about ancient China, I wanted a hands-on
project for them. So I came up with this idea. It worked really well and
I'm sure you could use it for elementary students, too:
Have each student bring in a flat-type eraser - prefereably the 2"
kind. They should also bring in a ball-point pen. You teach them about
"chops" and tell them they are going to design their own personal seal.
Let them work out a design on paper, and copy it onto the eraser. Then,
using the ball-point pen, they "carve" the design into the eraser. Take a
rubber-stamp ink pad, have them press their seal into it and then onto a
piece of paper and you have a chop imprint.
