Buget Problems

Help,

I am a first year teacher in Fairfax County VA. Today I have heard
some scary news about our County's ideas on how to balance their buget. They
seem to be under the impression that they can possibly get rid of 10 art
teachers positions and still hold to a class load of 36 classes, which will
allow the teacher to visit the students once every two weeks. To go further
they might also increase the class load by one student elimiating even more
teaching positions across the board.
All of this spells trouble to me. I seem to be the lowest fish on the
food chain, meaning I'll be the first to go. I have worked hard to get this
job and harder to insure that my students benefit from my classes.
I need to get a hold of material concerning the connection of the
Arts to the General Curriculum. I could use this information to plead my case
to our PTA an my Admistration. I am only now feeling some of the emotions
that are associated to the potenial loss of any part of our program that has
seemed to only recently come to a workable level. I don't think that my
parents don't know that I some times work while I am sick because if I miss a
day there will be no substitute hired. I care about the amount and quality
that my kids get from our art program.
I don't want to make it seem as though I am only concerned for my
job. I know that this matter goes deeper. I am only now finding out how deep.
Any help in this matter will be wonderful.
