This has been an unfortunate mess. I spent over 40 minutes downloading "junk"
over the weekend and I DO pay for my time. However, I realize that there are
glitches in the system and agree with Paula that this is a valuable resource.

I've taught 1-6 and 1-5 art in suburban Chicago for 19 years now and I've
seen changes, some good and some not. Fortunately, my district has always
shown support for art and music at the elementary level. We have one art
teacher per building, our own rooms (with sinks!) and see our students twice
a week. One difficult thing is that I see my 1st through 3rd graders for only
30 minutes at a time! Talk about "express lane" teaching! One of the things
that I feel is VERY important is advocacy and publicity. We do everything we
can to publicize what students are doing in the classroom. I've been sending
home a newsletter for 6 years now. We also have an annual art fair, observe
Youth Art Month, display art in the community and in our schools. Art is NOT
recreation time, but a valuable content area. I don't do "projects." I've
tried to drop that word entirely from my vocabulary as it denotes "play."

Another valuable tool is getting involved. Serve on district committees, get
involved with your professional organization and your community. We can't
stay behind closed classroom doors, even though it does take an awful lot of
