RE: [teacherartexchange] Copyright Issue... Again

In my workshop the guy said that ALL music is copyrighted and CAN NEVER be used without permission in any kind of context, educational or whatever. He said that visual arts are different and he didn't know exactly why, but he thought it was that the "work" is not in the same format as "music", which is lifted differently. In other words try as you might you could not lift Mona Lisa paint stroke by paint stroke, but you could indeed steal music note for note electronically. Again, he was speaking in terms of using art and music in an educational setting. You can not for example put on an established play with music without paying royalties, or have a concert without paying royalties. Or in the case of the workshop, lift music to put in a podcast.
 
and as for where do kids get the idea that they can steal? They don't see it as stealing, but because it is "out there" that makes it "everyone's". I don't think they make the connection to original thought, ownership, and survival.
