My final lesson for my Why Man Creates class yesterday was on
copyright. My student teacher is a singer/songwriter with a published
CD. She talked to my students about how her work is sometimes
"thieved" and went through the copyright process with them. I could
see light bulbs going off because she made this so personal.
Unfortunately, I think that is the only way to make the point!---
give a good example where someone has been wronged.
I often think, that when kids think they can get away with
"technology bypass," they think it doesn't hurt anybody. But they
need the bigger lesson.
Copyright protects ideas. We need to respect those places we go to
that ask for a citation, and acknowledge where it all comes from just
for the sake of eduction and protocol. It's about respect and honesty.
Fast and loose with anything always comes back to bite you . Our
kids don't have the regard. They think if the artist is rich it's
okay to steal it. Where did they get that lesson?????
