Ken,
The group my son goes to (20 somethings with various cognitive disabilities,
so somewhat different than your group but maybe similar too) does many craft
activities - painting wooden picture frames etc. These young adults seem
to find security in doing something that follows a step by step procedure
and has a sure outcome. Maybe you could start out with some crafts to
build their security level and their rapport with you and then hopefully
move into something a little more open-ended? Incorporating something that
plays upon their past is a great idea too. How about collaging a wooden
picture frame with scrapbook paper that has pictures from the 30's and 40's?

Also, my son's group enjoys making their crafts and then giving them as
gifts to people they care about.
