I think the photography idea is very good. In my limited experience, this population responds well to anything that refers to their younger days, which some of them remember very well. Those images may be very vivid for them while their current experience is confusing. My father, who was much older than the population to which you refer, in his last years really enjoyed doing watercolors that were very precicely detailed records of the blacksmith shop on their farm in the 1920's. Anything that validates that their personal story, however humble, is important and valued might be very meaningful and satisfying for them.
