What you can do is create a group for a class. Even if members of
your class join the group, unless they are your friend, they still
can't get into your account. I've used this for organizing events for
teens at our synagogue. I personally can't do this because not all my
students have or want Facebook.
I've also been using a wiki to communicate info to students and plan
to ask them to add info as well (eg. on art careers). They are much
easier to update than web-sites and you can use privacy settings so
that it's just used by the class. I recommend pbwiki or
wikispaces. An example that I created for a TappedIn talk on artist
trading cards is at: http://artisttradingcards.wikispaces.com/ My
computer class is at http://www.tbycomputers.pbwiki.com but some of
the pages are private (the art one is still in progress).
