I had an artist in residence who taught me a different way to make a clay whistle. He made two pinch pots and joined them. Then he poked a hole in the top of the sphere. He then created a coil about 1/4" thick and 1 inch long. Using a skewer, he poked through it to make a clay "straw." Then he positioned it , at an angle, above the hole and played with the pitch of the angle until it created sound. Lastly, he attached the "straw" to the body of the whistle. He did this with 5th graders and almost every student was able to get a sound within a few minutes. I know I had made them the traditional way at a PAEA workshop and all the art teachers took quite a while to get them to work. This way was SOOO much easier!

Good luck with it!
