Hi All,

I used unclaimed paintings from last year. Some had gorgeous colors. I
cropped them into strips with the big paper cutter, and stored them in
several large plastic bins. This year when I introduced my 6th graders
to Byzantine mosaics, I had them create paper mosaics in groups of
four. They had to choose an animal as the subject. Each group created
sketches on copy paper and selected one or a combination of images.
They made a chalk outline sketch of the animal and filled in the
animal and background with paper tesserae cut from the painted papers.
The mosaic panels were created with glue sticks, and, just to be sure
all pieces would be secure, I put a film of clear contact paper over
each panel. The reward for excellent performance was each student got
a 4 inch square ceramic tile and each student created a small mosaic
by using white glue to adhere small mosaic ceramic and glass tiles I
had left over from a big mosaic project I did with a grant I got for
last year. The completed small tiles were grouted. The 4" tiles I
found on Craigs List-turns out not far from my school neighborhood
someone was retiling a bathroom and donating used or extra tiles, and
I asked if they were clean on the back and if so claimed them. The
donor was thrilled to give them to a school in the neighborhood. I
try to use recycled materials whenever possible, not only to save
money, but also to show some responsibility for reducing the trash
overflow. The urban community around my school has an assortment of
tenants including college students who move in and out each semester,
and I find amazing things at the curbside. I added glass rondels found
at my local dollar store-these added another texture to the ceramic
and glass assortment students used in their tiles. I shall be offering
a presentation in mosaics at NAEA in MN in April, called Mandala
Mosaics.
