I had my students create mosaic tiles using thrift store plates which they
broke using hammers and ziplock bags; they wore goggles, and did the
smashing in a copy paper box lid. The pieces aren't all that sharp, and no
one got injured at all. I had tile nippers they used to get the broken
pieces into more specific shapes if needed.
